Vermillion, SD - Saint Francis Indian School showcased its literary prowess as five exceptional students received top honors at the University of South Dakota's Scholastic Writing Awards, held on March 1-2, 2025. Kolton, Andrew, Julian, Kingston, and Gabriel earned the prestigious Honorable Mention award for their outstanding critical essays and poetry addressing pressing current issues with insight and creativity.

The students' achievement was celebrated at an award ceremony hosted by the University of South Dakota's English Department. Gifted and Talented Education teacher Heidi Tahir was also recognized for her tireless dedication to nurturing her students' writing talents.

A highlight of the event was a unique opportunity for the students and their parents to engage in a panel interview with esteemed professors from the University of South Dakota's English department. This dynamic discussion allowed them to explore ways to improve written and speech communication skills, gaining invaluable insights from the experts.

The students' winning entries tackled topics such as vaping, alcoholism, parental involvement and climate change. Their work demonstrates a deep understanding of complex issues and showcases their exceptional writing skills.

The Scholastic Writing Awards is a prestigious competition that recognizes outstanding student writers. Saint Francis Indian School's students have significantly impacted this year's competition, and their achievement is a source of pride for the school and the community.
